Settling can. c. 1880. Settling cans were the forerunner of mechanical cream separators and served farmers as an early means of measuring cream. Milk was poured into the can and allowed to cool so the cream (butterfat particles are lighter than milk) would rise. Windows on the side of the can indicated the amount of cream. Once the separation was complete, milk was drained from the bottom through a spigot. H. 16", W. 13".
