Lincoln butter cutter. c. 1920. The butter cutter or "printer" enabled butter makers at coop creameries to mass produce oun-pound blocks of butter. The process was simple: Fresh butter was packed into wooden "Friday" boxes with stompers and ladles to eliminate air pockets. As the false bottom in the box was raised with a lever the butter was cut into rectangles. A handheld wire cutter was drawn through the butter horizontally to separate the blocks. The butter was then ready for packaging and final weighing. When the box emptied, it was replaced with a full one. This cutter was used at the Cold Spring Creamery. H. 3'6".
